Eugene Ballet Company: Swan Lake

  • Fri Feb 15

Event Details

The Eugene Ballet Company is bringing their production of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake to Spokane. Romantic music, world-class dancing, beautiful costumes, and elaborate scenery all set the stage for one of the most famous and loved works in the history of classical ballet. Swan Lake was the first ballet set to the score of a symphonic composer. Tchaikovsky’s romantic, dramatic score drew some of its inspiration from Russian folk tunes which gives the music an especially heart rending and touching quality.

The storyline is the classic tale of a Prince’s love for an enchanted Princess, Odette who is eternally imprisoned as a white swan under the spell of an evil sorcerer. Complicating matters for the Prince is the sorcerer’s wicked daughter Odile, symbolized in the ballet as a black swan, who tricks the Prince into thinking that she is Odette.

“Swan Lake has long been regarded as the pinnacle of the classical ballerina’s career. To dance the dual roles of Odette, the swan princess, and Odile, the wicked daughter of the sorcerer is the ultimate feather in a ballerina’s resumé.” — Toni Pimble, EBC Artistic Director

The 2013 tour of Eugene Ballet Company marks the premier appearance of two internationally recognized Eugene Ballet principal dancers, Yoshie Oshima and Juan Carlos Amy-Cordero, in the roles of Princess Odette/Odile and Prince Siegfried.

A native of Japan, Yoshie Oshima began her studies under Michiko Matsumoto. She graduated from the Vaganova Ballet Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia and the aspirant program of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet. She was awarded first prize in the Ballet Competition for Youth in Japan. Yoshie has danced professionally with North Carolina Dance Theatre, Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida and USA Ballet Company. Her roles include Clara in The Nutcracker, the Autumn Fairy in Cinderella and Alice in Alice in Wonderland.

Juan Carlos Amy-Cordero will appear in the role of Prince Siegfried. Originally trained at the Boston Ballet School and the San Francisco Ballet, Juan Carlos has danced in more than 40 ballets with Eugene Ballet Company since 2002. Juan Carlos has performed all over North America, the Caribbean, and Europe, including Spain, France, Belgium and Canada.

“Juan Carlos possesses extraordinary technical ability with dazzling pirouettes and darting batterie. He brings a commanding dramatic presence to the stage.” — Riley Grannan, EBC Managing Director
